How to Select the Right Sofa Size for Your Living Space

One of the hardest parts about moving or giving your new home a makeover is not knowing the size and space of what you are working with! Do not fall into the trap of purchasing something and then realizing it does not fit your space. Sounds like a terrible nightmare!

To avoid this common hassle, we thought to provide you with some tips on how to find the perfect sofa size, depending on your living room space. This could truly be applied for any piece of furniture, but sofas can be the biggest pain! But don’t worry, we are here for you and will help you to create your dream home!

1. Do not eyeball the size of your room and then buy a new couch

Let’s just get this idea out of your head. It truly is not smart! What you must do first is… MEASURE. Know your measurements before going shopping and getting your hopes set on something that will not work.

2. Design a room on paper first

Consider taking measurements, sitting down, and then writing out what your perfect living room would look like. Think about what you need before you let yourself “loose shop” and buy whatever looks pretty. Make a list of what you really need and what would work!

3. Consider your family size and the seating arrangement

What this means is, do not purchase a two person couch for a six person family. Buy something comfortable that can take up a good amount of the living room space. If you are in a smaller place and plan on having people over a lot, consider a smaller couch and use the rest of the space for a dining room table. Think about how it will work in the long run.

4. Think about sofa shape instead of just sofa size

It all depends if you want to make your living room the center of attention or not. If the answer is yes, the couch can achieve that for you. Try spicing it up, if you can, and get a spinning sofa (a sofa that literally spins around). If you are feeling fanicer, get an old fashioned loveseat (which we sell) and make that the centerpiece of the room. Want room for a coffee table? Do not buy too big of a couch that ends up sticking out of the living room space. Think about what your whole plan is for the living room.

We hope these tips helped for your sofa picking adventure. Luckily, we have so many amazing furniture options at Avery Lane so if you need a hand, we will lend you one!
